Questions on „active transportation“ (English Version) - Cognitive Pretest
Abstract:
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is tasked with monitoring trends in disease incidence as well as health and risk behaviors in Germany as part of its health monitoring activities. This includes assessing people’s willingness to change their behavior and identifying factors that could promote healthy behavior.
The subject of this pretest are questions that relate to covering distances through physical activity (also known as active transportation).
The questions were tested via cognitive interviews.
*Note: The items were tested in German. The items documented here are English translations of the original German wordings.*

Selection of Target Population/Quotas:
Quota sampling. The target group for the pretest consisted of adults aged 18 to 70. They were recruited based on the following quotas: gender (m/f) × age (18–25 years / 26–35 years / 36–45 years / 46–55 years / 56–65 years / 66–70 years). In addition, at least four participants were to lack a high school diploma or equivalent. In the final sample, this applied to five participants.
Test Date:
07/2024
Number of cognitive interviewers:
2
Survey mode:
CAWI
Pretest mode:
CAPI, Remote-CAPI
Procedure:
The cognitive interviews were conducted in person or via video call and recorded as audio files. The participants answered the questions in the online questionnaire independently on a computer, sharing their screen with the interviewers and occasionally commenting on it spontaneously. Cognitive probing questions were asked either immediately after individual questions or at the end of a questionnaire page (concurrent probing), or after blocks of questions (retrospective probing).
Incentive for respondents:
30 Euro
Project Description:
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) is tasked with monitoring trends in disease incidence as well as health and risk behaviors in Germany as part of its health monitoring activities. This includes assessing people’s willingness to change their behavior and identifying factors that could promote healthy behavior. Specifically, questions on the topic of physical activity were developed that relate to covering distances through physical activity (also known as active transportation). Since active transportation is not only good for one’s own health but also good for the climate, and a healthy climate, in turn, has a positive effect on the health of the population, questions were also developed regarding the public’s awareness of these co-benefits. In total, there are 11 questions for individuals aged 16 and older, which were designed to be answered via a written questionnaire.
The aim of the pretest was to use cognitive interviews to assess the extent to which the questions were suitable for the target group. The cognitive interviews were designed to assess the comprehensibility of the items and specific terms. The goal was to identify potential sources of error or difficulties in understanding the questions and, if necessary, to generate ideas for improving the wording of the questions.
