Project „LoneCovid“ – Questions on social networks and their evolution throughout the COVID-19 pandemic (English Version) - Cognitive Pretest
Zusammenfassung:
The “LoneCovid” project, funded by the BMBF, examines the long-term evolution of social relationships during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their impact on mental health, trust in politics and science, and compliance with public health measures.
This pretest focuses on questions designed to collect egocentric network data.
The questions were tested using video-based cognitive interviews.
*Note: The items were tested in German. The items documented here are English translations of the original German wordings.*

Vorgehensweise:
The cognitive interviews were conducted via videoconference. The interviewers shared their screens so that the participants could see the questions being tested, and they also read the questions aloud. The interviewers then entered the partici-pants’ responses into the computer. The cognitive probing questions were sometimes asked immediately after each indi-vidual question (concurrent probing) and sometimes after sev-eral questions had been answered (retrospective probing; see Downloads).

Projektbeschreibung:
The “LoneCovid” project, funded by the BMBF, examines the long-term evolution of social relationships during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as their impact on mental health, trust in politics and science, and compliance with public health measures. To this end, longitudinal data from the GESIS Panel will be combined with newly collected egocentric network data using a mixed-methods design.
Some of the questions used to collect egocentric network data were to undergo a cognitive pretest to assess the questions’ clarity, identify problems respondents might encounter when answering them, and determine the causes of these problems. In addition, the pretest should provide insights into what problems may arise during a video-based interview and how these can be addressed in a specific interview situation.
